Afghans in Germany protest Taliban restrictions on Shiites
A number of Afghans living in Germany held a protest gathering on Sunday evening, Sept. 20, 2026, to demonstrate against what they said was the Taliban administration’s growing restrictions on Afghanistan’s Shiites and the seizure of the Khatam al-Nabiyyin scientific centres in Kabul.
At the rally, the protesters called on the international community not to remain indifferent to what is happening in Afghanistan and to stop engagement with the Taliban administration. The main focus of the protest was said to be concern over intensifying pressure on Shiites and its consequences for Afghanistan’s social and religious situation.
According to the organisers, the gathering included not only Afghans but also a number of protesters from Iran, Lebanon and Iraq, as well as some German citizens. Participants described the Taliban administration’s treatment of Afghanistan’s Shiites as a form of genocide.
The Khatam al-Nabiyyin centres in Kabul are among the educational and religious institutions well known within Afghanistan’s Shiite community, and any action against them could have wide repercussions among the country’s residents and Afghan migrants abroad.
