UN Security Council to hold meeting on AI risks, with Sam Altman to speak
The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a public meeting next week focused on the risks artificial intelligence poses to international peace and security, with OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman also due to speak.
Reuters reported that an OpenAI spokesperson said on Friday that Altman will attend the Security Council meeting in person on Wednesday. According to the spokesperson, Altman’s remarks will focus on international coordination, the creation of common safety standards, and the steps the company is taking to help people benefit from the technology.
The meeting is being held at France’s initiative, the country that holds the Security Council presidency in September. French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot will preside over the session.
In a concept note for the meeting sent to Security Council members and seen by Reuters, France said that given the risk of artificial intelligence being misused for malicious purposes, action to develop the technology safely and responsibly is essential for the benefit of the global community.
France also said the meeting would provide an opportunity to examine the risks arising from losing control of AI, as well as the use of new AI models in actions that could affect international peace and security. The Security Council is one of the United Nations’ most important bodies for dealing with global security issues.
