Red Cross hands over $110,000 worth of non-food aid to Afghan Red Crescent
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has handed over a shipment of non-food aid worth a total of $110,000 to the Afghan Red Crescent Society for distribution among returning migrants and vulnerable families.
The shipment includes 1,600 blankets, 200 tents, 200 kitchen sets, 200 water barrels and 400 tarpaulins. In addition, a cargo truck worth about $43,000 has been provided to the organisation to support the transport and delivery of aid.
Faisal Husam, head of the International Red Cross office in Afghanistan, said the items have been provided for distribution through humanitarian partners and are part of support programmes aimed at helping those in need. According to him, the focus of the aid is on people who have recently returned to Afghanistan or have been affected by incidents such as earthquakes.
Shahabuddin Dilawar, head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, said the aid will be distributed to families affected by various incidents as well as returning migrants. He added that the distribution of cash assistance is also continuing in a number of provinces.
Dilawar also said that about eight million migrants have returned to the country. He stressed that the new aid will be distributed without discrimination to those in need.
Afghanistan has faced extensive humanitarian needs in recent years, and returning migrants, people affected by natural disasters and low-income families are among the most in need. Despite this new assistance, needs remain high in many provinces.
