Pakistan’s Ishaq Dar arrives in London for maritime security talks and bilateral ties
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has arrived in London on a four-day official visit focused on diplomatic consultations, maritime security and bilateral relations with Britain, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said.
According to Islamabad, Dar will begin his programme with a meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Pakistani officials said the talks will review bilateral relations, security cooperation and regional coordination.
Pakistani sources said Islamabad will stress expanding maritime cooperation and ensuring the security of shipping lanes in the discussions. They said this is of particular importance for Pakistan, given the country’s heavy reliance on sea routes.
One of the main focuses of the visit is Dar’s meeting with the secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization. He is expected to raise the issue of Pakistani seafarers held hostage by Somali pirates.
Pakistani officials said Islamabad hopes that, with the cooperation of the International Maritime Organization and regional governments, the release of the crew can be expedited. Maritime security in regional waters and the growing threats to commercial vessels will also be discussed at the meeting.
Dar will also meet Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the new secretary-general of the Commonwealth, later in the visit. According to Pakistan, the talks will focus on intra-organizational cooperation, economic opportunities and Pakistan’s place within the Commonwealth structure.
The International Maritime Organization is one of the United Nations’ specialised agencies and works on matters related to the safety and security of shipping. The Commonwealth is also an association of countries, most of which share a historical background with Britain.
