Amnesty urges global action to hold Taliban authorities accountable
Amnesty International said that five years after the Taliban authorities took control, Afghanistan has faced a catastrophic human rights crisis, with impunity and injustice overshadowing people’s lives. The group has called on the international community to adopt a more unified and stronger approach to hold the Taliban authorities accountable.
Amnesty International’s South Asia regional office, alongside the launch of its global campaign, “Break the Silence; End Human Rights Violations in Afghanistan,” stressed that the continuation of Taliban rule has not improved the situation, but has instead led to the persistence of repression and violations of the fundamental rights of the Afghan people.
In a petition, Amnesty International has called on the international community to urgently establish a strong and lasting mechanism to address human rights violations in Afghanistan. The organization also stressed the use of all pressure tools to force the Taliban authorities to respect the rights of women and girls, end gender persecution, stop corporal punishment, and create an independent and impartial judicial system.
The human rights group has also called on citizens in various countries to join the campaign and urge their governments to take clear and practical action against the ongoing repression in Afghanistan.
Amnesty International is one of the best-known international organizations for documenting and pursuing human rights violations, and in the years since the Taliban authorities returned to power, it has repeatedly warned about sweeping restrictions on women, girls and civil liberties in Afghanistan.
