UN Reaffirms Afghan Women’s Right to Live Free from Fear Amid Taliban Restrictions
The United Nations has recently emphasized the right of Afghan women and girls to freely exercise their fundamental rights without fear of violence, threats, abuse, or punishment. This assertion comes amid widespread restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration on the lives of Afghan women.
On Wednesday, August 4, the UN published a message on X (formerly Twitter) stating that every individual can contribute to change by standing against violence, confronting sexual harassment, and challenging gender stereotypes.
This statement comes as women and girls in Afghanistan have faced persistent limitations under the Taliban’s rule for nearly five years, being deprived of their most basic rights, including education and employment. Their participation in many social and administrative arenas has drastically decreased.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) previously warned that with each new restriction, women are increasingly excluded from society. According to the agency, the continuation of this trend seriously undermines women’s social participation and access to services.
After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, a series of restrictions on women’s lives were imposed, and civil protests by women against these decisions were met with violent repression.
