UK Parliament Exposes Government Failures in Resettling Afghan Allies
The UK House of Commons Defence Committee has revealed that successive British governments’ failures in managing resettlement programs have put the lives of hundreds of former Afghan collaborators at risk. According to the committee, many of these individuals, after their applications were wrongly rejected, had to live in hiding for years under Taliban rule.
The report released on Thursday states that 884 previously rejected resettlement applications from former members of Afghanistan’s special units, known as “Triples,” were accepted upon re-examination. The committee described this as an “important correction” but emphasized that the review came after many applicants had spent years living in secret, exhausted their savings, and faced limited options for safety.
Titled “Moving Heaven and Earth? Disclosure of Afghan Data and Resettlement Programs,” the report examines the Ministry of Defence’s performance following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. It exposes structural failures in management, accountability, and data protection.
Tendhesi, Chair of the UK Defence Committee, stated that the investigation began with a data breach case but ultimately assessed the real-life consequences of delays, secrecy, and poor decision-making on individuals’ lives.
The Defence Committee also labeled the 2022 disclosure of thousands of Afghan applicants’ data as a “predictable structural failure.” According to the report, in February 2022, a Ministry of Defence official mistakenly sent a file that was believed to contain information about around 150 individuals but actually included personal data from over 18,500 applications.
The committee pointed to inappropriate file management tools, weak administrative procedures, inadequate staff training, and insufficient oversight as primary causes of the incident. The report concluded that the institution was unprepared to manage a large-scale migration program.
