China’s Wang Yi Calls Iran-US Agreement a ‘New Starting Point’ Amid Complex Talks Ahead

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the recently signed understanding between Iran and the United States as a “new starting point” for diplomacy, while warning that the next round of talks between the two countries will be difficult and complex. Wang Yi emphasized that a significant distance remains before reaching the final goal.
Iran and the US signed a ceasefire understanding early Monday. According to this accord, the United States will halt its maritime blockade against Iran, and Iran will gradually reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy transit.
In a conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Wang Yi stressed that the current consensus should not be seen as the final destination but rather the beginning of a continued diplomatic process. Taking a cautious approach, he added that the upcoming phase will require greater efforts and careful management of differences.
The Chinese foreign minister also called for a more active role from the UN Security Council in supporting the negotiation process. According to him, backing from international organizations can help consolidate future agreements and build trust among the parties involved.
Furthermore, Wang Yi announced Beijing’s readiness to cooperate with Islamabad to advance peaceful initiatives in the Middle East and the Gulf region. This stance indicates China’s intention to play a more prominent role in regional diplomatic developments, especially in coordination with its strategic partner, Pakistan.
