Smartphones Banned in Schools and Offices in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province

The Taliban’s Department of Education in Ghor province has announced that from now on, bringing and using smartphones in all offices and schools in the province is prohibited. This ban applies to all administrative staff, teachers, and students and will be enforced starting Tuesday.
On Monday, June 15, the media office of the Ghor Department of Education published a statement on its Facebook page, stating that this decision was made based on a provincial administrative meeting as well as a letter from the Taliban military court in Ghor. The statement emphasized that bringing smartphones into workplace and educational environments is “completely forbidden.”
Taliban education officials have urged all employees, teachers, and students to strictly refrain from bringing and using smartphones in administrative and educational areas. They warned that any violation of this directive will be considered a breach of “orders from competent authorities” and will result in legal consequences.
This decision comes amid the Taliban’s increasingly widespread restrictions on access to communication devices and digital spaces across various educational and social sectors in recent years. Some residents of Ghor say such limitations could negatively affect education and access to learning resources, but the Taliban administration has not yet provided any explanation regarding the educational impact of this ban.
