Swiss Police Clash with Protesters Ahead of G7 Summit

Around 20,000 people took to the streets of Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday to protest against the upcoming G7 summit. The gathering was dispersed following interventions by riot police who used tear gas. Reports indicate that security forces employed strict measures to break up the demonstration.
The protests occurred on the eve of the three-day G7 summit scheduled from June 15 to 17 in Évian-les-Bains, France, near the Swiss border and the city of Geneva. Leaders of the seven industrialized nations, including U.S. President Donald Trump, are expected to attend the summit.
Protesters carried placards expressing support for the people of Palestine and Gaza, while simultaneously criticizing Donald Trump’s policies. Some demonstrations focused on issues such as wage inequality, limited access for women to managerial positions, and their underrepresentation in executive roles.
In preparation for the summit, French authorities announced that over 13,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed to secure the event venues. The G7 comprises the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States. It is also anticipated that leaders from other countries, including India, Kenya, and Ukraine, will participate in parts of the discussions.
