US Congresswoman Declares Taliban Illegitimate, Opposes Recognition of Their Rule

A member of the United States House of Representatives has rejected any efforts to legitimize the Taliban administration, stressing that the current governing structure in Kabul should not be recognized as a legitimate government. She emphasized that Washington must not recognize this administration at any level.
Nancy Mace, a representative from South Carolina, called the Taliban “terrorists” in a post on the social media platform X, stating that any action to normalize relations with them is “reckless and dangerous.” These remarks come as the Taliban administration continues to face widespread criticism over human rights abuses, restrictions on women, and a lack of electoral legitimacy since returning to power.
Mace announced that she and several lawmakers have introduced a bill titled the “No Recognition for Terrorist Regimes Act.” According to her, this bill officially designates the Taliban as a “foreign terrorist organization” and classifies their governing structure in Afghanistan as a “state sponsor of terrorism.”
Under this bill, US federal agencies would be prohibited from recognizing what the Taliban call the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.” The Congresswoman added that this law clearly outlines that the Taliban will not be accepted by the United States as a legitimate government now or in the future.
