Australia Condemns Crackdown on Protests in Herat, Calls for Respect of Basic Rights

The Australian government has expressed deep concern over the suppression of public protests and the detention of women in Herat province. It has urged the Taliban administration to respect the fundamental rights of Afghan citizens.
On Thursday, June 11, the Australian Embassy in Afghanistan posted on the social media platform X that recent developments in Herat have caused serious alarm. The diplomatic mission emphasized that policies and actions leading to the repression of women and girls must be reversed.
The Australian Embassy also shared a statement from the Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) regarding the detention of women in Herat and the use of force against protesters.
In recent months, restrictions on women in various sectors—including education, employment, and presence in public spaces—have increased. These measures have triggered widespread domestic and international reactions and have intensified concerns about the state of human rights in the country.
