WFP Warns War Against Iran Could Drive Millions Worldwide to Hunger

A senior official from the World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that continued war against Iran could push millions of vulnerable people around the world towards hunger and famine. He emphasized that the consequences of this conflict will not be confined to one region but will be felt broadly.

Carl Skau, a prominent official from the UN-affiliated agency, told CNN that the escalating crisis deepens existing pressures on the global food supply system. According to him, rising energy and food prices, coupled with reduced financial aid, have severely limited WFP’s operational capacity.

Skau stated that the organization has been forced to reduce the amount of aid allocated to needy individuals in several areas, a move that could worsen the condition of millions. He warned that if instability persists, the level of food insecurity in some countries will reach a critical stage.

The UN official noted that the consequences of rising oil prices are already evident in countries such as Sri Lanka, Somalia, and Afghanistan. Afghanistan, under Taliban rule and facing a widespread economic crisis along with severe restrictions on women’s work and activities, is among the countries highly vulnerable to external economic shocks.

Skau also highlighted that disruptions to shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s key energy transit routes, have increased concerns about the durability of the crisis. He expressed hope that this strategic passage would reopen soon but warned that even if it does, the economic and human consequences of the crisis will continue in the long term.
