Former Taliban Commander Sentenced to 42 Years for Kidnapping US Journalist

A federal court in New York has sentenced Haji Najibullah, a former Taliban commander, to 42 years in prison for the kidnapping of David Rohde, an American journalist, and two of his companions. U.S. federal prosecutors announced on Tuesday, June 8, that Najibullah played a direct role in the abduction.

According to court documents, the incident took place in 2008, when David Rohde, his Afghan translator, and their driver were held captive for over seven months in hideouts in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The kidnappers sought ransom in exchange for their release and demanded the freeing of several Taliban prisoners.

Prosecutors stated that during their captivity, the hostages were forced to record videos proving they were alive. These videos showed armed Taliban militants threatening them with weapons, which was part of the kidnappers’ pressure tactics to meet their demands.

U.S. officials said Najibullah served as a Taliban commander in Wardak Province starting in 2007 and was involved in ambush attacks against American forces. This case highlights once again the role of Taliban-affiliated figures in kidnapping and exploiting civilians, a practice that has posed a serious threat to the security of citizens and journalists in Afghanistan for years.

At the time of his abduction, David Rohde worked for The New York Times. He and his translator managed to escape their captors after seven months of imprisonment.

Reports indicate that Haji Najibullah was arrested in Ukraine in October 2020 and later transferred to the United States for judicial prosecution.
