Taliban Fires on Protesters in Jebrail Township, Herat

Dozens of residents of Jebrail Township in Herat province staged a protest on Tuesday, June 9, against the arrest of women and girls by the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice under the Taliban administration. According to a video circulated on social media, Taliban forces opened fire to disperse the protesters. Local sources reported that at least two people were injured as a result of the incident.
These sources also stated that several protesters were beaten by Taliban forces. No further details about the health status of the injured have been released so far.
In recent days, the morality police from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Herat have detained several women who appeared in public places without wearing a burqa or prayer chador, transferring them to prison. This action has provoked widespread reactions among Herat’s residents.
Citizens of Herat say that the increasing restrictions on women and harsh crackdowns in urban areas have created a tense social atmosphere in the province. Despite growing criticism, the Taliban administration has yet to issue an official explanation regarding the shooting at the protesters.
