7.8 Magnitude Earthquake in the Philippines Kills at Least 37

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Philippines has claimed the lives of at least 37 people and injured hundreds more. Rescue officials have announced that search operations for missing persons are ongoing.

The earthquake struck the Mindanao region on Monday (June 8), causing extensive damage to residential areas. The city of General Santos, with a population of nearly 700,000, reported the most severe damage, where several buildings were partially or completely destroyed.

Residents of the city described the tremors as unprecedented in intensity. Jo Calma, one of the survivors, said tears streamed down his face during the quake as he feared for his family’s safety. According to him, this was the first time he had experienced such a strong earthquake.

Jason Manark, another survivor, reported a total blackout of water and electricity and said residents are facing shortages of basic necessities. He added that many families do not even have access to drinking water.

Rescue officials confirmed that two people have been rescued alive from the rubble so far, while at least two others remain missing. Military forces and rescue teams are present in the area, and efforts to clear debris and provide aid continue.

Dioselanda Delovio, the mother of one of the missing children, said it is very difficult for her to accept that her child is trapped under the rubble.

The Philippines, located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, has also witnessed deadly earthquakes in recent months.
