French Left-Wing Candidate Mélenchon Calls China a More Rational Partner Than the US

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the left-wing candidate in France’s presidential election, has called for a new approach to his country’s foreign policy, emphasizing the need for broader dialogue and cooperation with China. He described China as a “rational” partner in international affairs, contrasting it critically with the policies of the United States.
Mélenchon suggested that France should move towards engagement with China, arguing that Chinese officials behave more rationally in international decision-making. In sharp remarks, he accused Americans of frequently being ready to use force, describing this approach as counterproductive.
The French politician previously criticized the French government’s stance on the interventionist policies of the United States in an earlier interview. He stressed the necessity for Paris to adopt an independent position and called for resistance against certain actions by Washington, including those related to Iran.
Mélenchon, who leads France’s left-wing movement, officially announced his readiness to participate in the country’s 2027 presidential election earlier last month. The upcoming election takes place amid discussions over the future direction of France’s foreign policy, which remains a central issue in the political competition.
