FAO: The Future of Global Agriculture Tied to BRICS Cooperation

A senior official from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) stated that BRICS member countries, given their substantial share of the global population and economy, can play a decisive role in the future agricultural markets. However, this goal cannot be achieved without investment and infrastructure development.

Oleg Kubiakov, Director of the FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation, told TV BRICS on the sidelines of the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that the manner of cooperation among BRICS members, as well as the group’s relations with other countries in agriculture and the food industry, will largely determine the future path of the global economy and trade.

According to him, BRICS countries account for about 42 percent of the world’s population and over one-third of the global GDP, holding a significant share of international trade, including agricultural products and related industries.

Kubiakov emphasized that a fundamental priority in these collaborations is ensuring the sustainable development of agricultural and food systems. This process involves creating appropriate regulatory frameworks, exchanging successful experiences, providing fair market access for producers, and utilizing innovations such as artificial intelligence and scientific advancements at the nano and molecular levels in sectors like crop and livestock improvement.

He added that this issue holds special importance for BRICS countries with young populations, including Brazil, South Africa, and India, as today’s generation of students will shape the future patterns of global production and consumption.

The FAO official also highlighted the importance of strengthening rural infrastructure, noting that in many countries, a significant portion of agricultural production is carried out by small farms and farmers. Developing roads, healthcare and educational centers, high-speed internet, and providing financial opportunities in rural areas can contribute to sustainable development, social foundations consolidation, and improved public welfare.

The 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum was held from June 3 to 6, with TV BRICS participating as a media partner.
