Taliban Administration Announces New Firearm Permit Procedures in Afghanistan

The Taliban’s Ministry of Interior spokesperson has announced that from now on, firearm permits in the country will be issued based on a new procedure and specific criteria. According to him, this procedure was prepared after security and legal reviews and has been approved by the Taliban leadership.

In an interview with the media, Abdul Mateen Qani stated that the goal of this move is to regulate the distribution process of weapons and reduce the culture of firearm possession in society. He said that only those individuals who are deemed qualified and whose security needs are verified will receive a permit. He added that weapons will be distributed to security sectors by the relevant authorities, while for economic and commercial sectors, actions will be taken according to criteria and permits from the respective departments.

The Ministry of Interior spokesperson emphasized their efforts to ensure comprehensive security, aiming to reduce the need to carry firearms and prevent the spread of a “gun culture.” However, critics have repeatedly raised concerns that without transparency in law implementation and impartial oversight, such procedures might be enforced arbitrarily.

In recent years, carrying firearms without permits and their unnecessary use have posed serious security challenges for the country’s residents, occasionally leading to deadly incidents. Citizens are now closely watching how this new procedure will be practically implemented and to what extent the Taliban administration commits to its uniform application for all.
