Three European Figures Poised to Lead Potential EU-Russia Talks

Speculation about the start of a new dialogue between the European Union and Russia is rising, with reports indicating that the EU has shortlisted three individuals to potentially lead negotiations with Moscow.
The publication Politico reported that Antonio Costa, President of the European Council; Sauli Niinistö, former President of Finland; and Jean-Claude Juncker, former President of the European Commission, might serve as EU representatives in future talks with Russia. If finalized, this move could mark the first official step toward establishing a new channel of communication between Brussels and Moscow.
Previously, Peter Pellegrini, President of Slovakia, called for initiating dialogue between the EU and Russia concerning the war in Ukraine, emphasizing the need to appoint a specific individual as the EU’s official representative for these negotiations. This appeal came amid growing calls from some European leaders for a political solution to reduce tensions.
On another front, Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, stated that Vladimir Putin’s comments about nominating Gerhard Schröder, former German Chancellor, as a mediator between Moscow and Brussels, have sparked widespread debate in Europe. According to him, Russia has yet to receive an official response from the EU regarding this proposal.
Additionally, Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, recently expressed his readiness to play a role in potential negotiations between the two parties.
Relations between Russia and the European Union have severely deteriorated since Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine. During this period, instead of expanding political engagement, European countries have concentrated on increasing defense budgets and strengthening military capabilities—a trend that has complicated the prospects for direct talks.
