Man Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison for Recruiting for Taliban and Pakistani Taliban in India

A special court of India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Bangalore has sentenced a man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for radicalizing and recruiting individuals for the Taliban and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The court also imposed a fine of 63,000 rupees on him.
The NIA stated that the case proceedings began in April 2026, and the accused confessed to the charges during the trial. According to released information, the individual is named Hamraz Al-Rashid Sheikh.
The investigative agency explained that between 2019 and 2022, while residing in Saudi Arabia, Sheikh became acquainted with the ideologies of the Taliban and the TTP through contacts with Pakistani and Afghan nationals and gradually developed an affiliation with them.
Indian officials added that upon returning to India, Sheikh, along with another person, attempted to identify vulnerable youths by promoting and propagating the views of these groups, recruiting them to join. The NIA announced that both accused planned to travel to Afghanistan to join the TTP.
The Taliban and its Pakistani faction, the TTP, have faced widespread regional and international criticism in recent years for their militant activities and extremist stances. Critics say the expansion of recruitment networks beyond their traditional area has raised concerns over the security implications posed by these groups.
