India to Host BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in May 2024

India, as the current BRICS chair, has announced that the group’s Foreign Ministers meeting will be held on May 14 and 15, 2024, in the country. Indian media have reported that preparations are underway in New Delhi to host the event.

According to reports, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, is expected to travel to India this week to participate in the BRICS summit. This visit is said to be part of multilateral cooperation among BRICS member countries.

Reports indicate that the presence of Iran’s senior diplomat could signify efforts to expand cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi within the BRICS framework. Official details of the trip’s agenda have not yet been fully released.

Iran, along with Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, joined BRICS in 2024. The group, an intergovernmental organization, was established in 2006 by Russia, China, India, and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011.

Additionally, at the start of 2024, several other countries began the process of joining the organization. According to reports, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Cuba, Uganda, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan will be recognized as BRICS partner countries from January 1, 2025.
