UNAMA Honors the Crucial Role of Mothers in Afghan Society on Mother’s Day

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) marked Mother’s Day by recognizing the fundamental role that mothers play in shaping peaceful societies both in Afghanistan and around the world. On Sunday, 20th of Sawr, UNAMA published a message on its Facebook page appreciating the “unconditional kindness, strength, and sacrifices” of mothers.

UNAMA emphasized that the continuous care, resilience, and dedication of mothers form the foundation of social stability and the nurturing of future generations. The message stated that the role of mothers extends beyond the family framework, significantly influencing social cohesion and a culture of peace.

This acknowledgment comes amid the challenging economic and social conditions many mothers face under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Widespread restrictions on women’s work and education have increased the pressures on mothers, complicating their responsibility to meet their families’ needs in the current crisis.

Reports indicate that many mothers are deprived of their most basic rights and have limited access to quality healthcare services. Additionally, domestic violence, poverty, and hunger present serious daily challenges for many mothers.

In this context, the symbolic appreciation of mothers occurs while women’s rights activists consistently stress the urgent need for concrete actions to improve the situation of women and mothers in the country. They call on the Taliban administration to enable access to education, work, and healthcare services for women.
