Taliban Water Minister Visits Amu Darya Damage in Balkh, Promises Urgent Repair Plans

Mullah Mohammad Yunus Akhundzada, the Taliban’s Minister of Water and Energy, visited the damaged areas along the Amu Darya River in Shortepa district and Hairatan town in Balkh province. According to the ministry, he closely inspected the extent of shoreline destruction, the scale of damage, and watercourse diversion.
Based on published information, the Minister of Water and Energy conducted a comprehensive assessment of the current situation and expressed concern over the damages. He stated that fundamental reinforcements of the Amu Darya River are among the ministry’s top priorities.
Akhundzada added that fundamental and sustainable plans have been developed to prevent further destruction and are expected to be implemented in the near future. However, local residents continue to demand immediate and practical action to control the damages caused by the Amu Darya River, fearing that any delay could cause further harm to agricultural lands and residential areas.
The Amu Darya River is considered one of the most important water resources in northern Afghanistan, and changes in its course or shoreline damage can have extensive economic and social consequences – a matter requiring precise planning and transparent execution by the Taliban administration.
