Four Women Drown in Helmand River; Two Rescued

Local Taliban officials in Helmand province reported that on Friday, May 1, four women lost their lives after drowning in the Helmand River, while two others were rescued. The incident occurred in the Ainak area of Nad Ali district.
Shir Mohammad Wahdat, deputy spokesman for the Taliban’s Department of Information and Culture in Helmand, stated that initially an elderly woman, a member of the family, drowned in the river. According to him, several other women entered the water to save her but were unable to rescue her, resulting in four of them losing their lives.
In recent weeks, following seasonal rains, water levels and the river currents in Afghanistan, including those in the Helmand River, have increased, making the rivers more turbulent. With warmer weather and the arrival of spring, residents’ visits to riverbanks have also increased.
Simultaneously, reports from other provinces, including Farah, indicate that several citizens have drowned in rivers. Despite the recurrence of such incidents, the Taliban administration has yet to announce a comprehensive and systematic public awareness program or safety measures in high-risk areas.
