Symbolic Gesture in Turkey: Afghan Girl Assumes Governor Role for a Day

Abdullah Erin, the governor of Turkey’s Isparta province, symbolically entrusted the administration of the province to an Afghan female student for a few hours in honor of World Children’s Day. This symbolic act aimed to highlight the role of children in society.
This responsibility was handed over to Hira Su Yilmaz, an outstanding Afghan student. She sat in the governor’s seat in the presence of local officials and participated in the official programs of the day.
This event takes place while in Afghanistan, girls beyond the sixth grade still remain deprived of the right to education. Since the Taliban’s return to power, extensive restrictions have been imposed on girls’ education, and even after several years, secondary and high schools have yet to reopen for them.
While an Afghan student abroad has the opportunity to symbolically occupy a managerial position, thousands of girls inside Afghanistan continue to be deprived of their most basic educational rights—a subject that continues to attract widespread domestic and international criticism.
