EU and ASEAN Stress Inclusive Government and Human Rights in Afghanistan

The European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have jointly emphasized the necessity of forming an inclusive government in Afghanistan and respecting human rights. The statement was released on Wednesday, April 27, during the 25th ministerial meeting of the two organizations, expressing concern over the ongoing crisis and the state of fundamental citizen rights in the country.
The statement said that a “fully representative and inclusive” government must be established based on the rule of law, respect for human rights, and fundamental freedoms for all residents of Afghanistan. This emphasis comes as the Taliban administration has yet to create the political structure demanded by the international community, with broad political participation from various ethnic groups and factions still under discussion.
Both parties also stressed guaranteeing unrestricted access for Afghan citizens to humanitarian aid across all parts of the country. In recent years, restrictions and challenges in the distribution of aid have been repeatedly raised by international organizations, causing concerns about their impact on the humanitarian situation.
The meeting also addressed ongoing tensions in Afghanistan, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and take actions to reduce these tensions. ASEAN members and the European Union further emphasized the continuation of international humanitarian assistance to address the current crisis and stated their commitment to supporting this process.
