UNAMA Condemns Pakistan’s Attacks on Kunar, Urges Protection of Civilians and Educational Institutions

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has responded to recent Pakistani attacks on Kunar province, stating that under international humanitarian law, civilians and civilian facilities, especially educational centers, must be protected at all times.
According to reports, Pakistani military forces targeted parts of Kunar’s provincial center as well as areas in the districts of Marawara, Dangam, and Sheltan on Monday afternoon. Among the targets of these attacks was Seyed Jamaluddin Afghan University.
It is reported that seven civilians were killed and 75 others injured as a result. Among the wounded are women, children, and 30 students, raising concerns about the safety of educational institutions.
On Tuesday, UNAMA issued a statement emphasizing that all parties are obligated under widely accepted international norms to prevent harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure, especially educational institutions. The agency added that dozens of Afghan civilians have been killed or injured due to these attacks.
UNAMA also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
