CNN Reports President Trump Opposes Iran’s New Proposal to Reduce Tensions

CNN, citing two informed sources, reported that Donald Trump, the President of the United States, showed reluctance to accept Iran’s new plan to ease tensions during a Monday night meeting with senior national security officials at the White House. The proposal focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz as an international waterway and deferred issues related to Iran’s nuclear program to later stages of dialogue.
According to the report, Tehran had presented this offer to the American side in recent days. However, U.S. officials stated that reopening the Strait of Hormuz without linking it to the nuclear dossier would weaken what they call “Washington’s leverage.”
Iran has repeatedly stressed that its nuclear program is peaceful in nature and its activities are under international supervision. At the same time, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy transit route in the region, has led to increases in global energy prices, including in the United States.
CNN also reported that Trump has spoken cautiously in recent public comments about resuming military attacks against Iran, effectively extending the fragile ceasefire. However, no details of his final decision on next steps have been released following Monday night’s meeting.
Olivia Wills, the White House deputy spokesperson, declined to provide further details about the talks but stated that the United States will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. Some White House officials have also spoken of divisions within Iran’s political structure, a claim previously denied by Iranian officials.
