Bangladesh Launches First Unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Partnership with Russian State Firm Rosatom

Bangladesh has launched the first unit of the Rooppur nuclear power plant in collaboration with the Russian state company Rosatom. Officials from both countries have described this move as a significant step in the development of Bangladesh’s energy infrastructure.
The head of Rosatom called the activation of this unit a historic event for Bangladesh and stated that the project could play a decisive role in ensuring the country’s sustainable electricity supply.
The Rooppur nuclear power plant is located about 160 kilometers from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The plant includes two VVER-1200 model reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts. It was constructed based on a contract signed on December 25, and its development phase is still ongoing.
Loading of nuclear fuel into the reactor of the first unit is considered a crucial stage of the project. After this process is completed, the electricity produced will be transmitted to Bangladesh’s national grid for the first time, marking the official start of operations for this unit.
