Trump Clashes Verbally with ’60 Minutes’ Host Over Shooter’s Statement

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, sparked controversy during an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes” when he sharply responded to the program’s host after she read sections of a statement from the shooter at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

The tension escalated when Nora O’Donnell, the longtime host of the show, read parts of the manifesto of Cole Allen, who opened fire on Saturday night at the Hilton Washington hotel during the annual White House dinner. The statement revealed that Allen intended to target the Trump administration and contained harsh accusations against the president.

Trump responded by saying he had anticipated that the text would be read on the program and told the host that such statements should not be aired on television. He emphasized that the accusations were baseless and described himself as “completely exonerated.” Trump also called the shooter a “mentally ill person” and criticized the media for amplifying the shooter’s words.

In response to the verbal attacks, O’Donnell said she merely quoted the published statements; however, Trump reiterated that reading the manifesto on “60 Minutes” was inappropriate.

This incident has reignited debates about Trump’s relationship with the media. Press freedom advocacy groups have previously condemned his repeated verbal attacks on journalists.

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) regarded such behavior as part of a pattern that, according to the organization, undermines the role of free and independent media in a democratic system—a topic that remains a subject of discussion in the political and media landscape of the United States.
