EU Enforces New Ban on Russian LNG Imports as Part of Energy Independence Plan

The European Union’s short-term ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports officially took effect today, April 25, marking a key step in the bloc’s broader strategy to phase out energy dependence on Moscow by 2027.

The European Council approved the plan in January, stipulating that all Russian LNG imports will be fully banned starting in 2027, with pipeline gas imports ending by September 30 of the same year. As per this timeline, the initial practical measure began today with the suspension of short-term contracts.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin previously warned that if the EU fully implements its plan to cut reliance on Russian gas, Moscow might exit the European market ahead of schedule and redirect its exports elsewhere.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak also announced that Russian companies intend to channel part of their LNG exports to so-called “friendly” countries such as China, India, Thailand, and the Philippines. These developments signal structural changes in the European energy market, with increased competition over new export routes.
