Widespread Wildfire in Japan Forces Evacuation of 2,500 Residents

Local authorities in Japan have reported a widespread wildfire in the mountainous areas of Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, which has so far destroyed more than 200 hectares of forest. At least 2,588 residents from 1,229 households have been forced to evacuate their homes. The fire, which started on Wednesday, continues to spread intensely in several locations.

Officials say the blaze has already destroyed seven buildings, and firefighting efforts face challenges due to difficult weather conditions. Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have been deployed to assist local firefighting teams in accelerating fire containment efforts.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency has requested a rapid response firefighting team from neighboring Miyagi Prefecture to be sent to the area. Meanwhile, all elementary, junior high, and high schools in Otsuchi have been closed for the day.

Kozo Hirano, mayor of Otsuchi, stated that the situation is “changing moment by moment,” and city officials will continuously update residents on developments. This comes after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Iwate earlier this week, prompting a special earthquake warning for the prefecture and six other regions.

The local meteorological agency has issued warnings about continuing dry weather and strong winds in the region, emphasizing that these conditions could worsen and further spread the wildfire.
