US Senate Rejects Proposal to Limit Trump’s War Powers

The United States Senate has rejected a proposal aimed at limiting the war powers of President Donald Trump, with 51 votes against and 46 in favor. The resolution sought to increase Congressional oversight over the President’s military actions.
The Senate Democrats’ leader had stated before the vote that this was the fifth time the proposal was being brought to a vote, intending to prevent the escalation of military conflict with Iran. He emphasized that Congress must play a fundamental role in decisions related to war.
The Associated Press reported that Republicans in Congress have broadly supported Trump’s military approaches, which contributed to the resolution failing to secure enough votes.
Under United States law, the President holds authority to direct military operations; however, the scope of these powers and the role of Congress have long been contentious issues between the country’s two major political parties.
