UK and France Agree on £660 Million Deal to Curb Channel Migrant Crossings

The British government has announced that under a new security agreement with France, it will pay £660 million to prevent illegal crossings of migrants through the English Channel—a waterway that separates the UK from France and has become one of the most contentious migration routes in recent years.

According to Reuters, approximately £500 million of this fund will be allocated to strengthening security measures along the northern French coastline. These measures include the deployment of nearly 1,100 security, intelligence, and military personnel to those areas.

Under the terms of the agreement, an additional £160 million will only be paid if the new measures are deemed successful in preventing migrant crossings. This condition is part of a monitoring mechanism to oversee the practical outcomes of the agreement.

This deal replaces a previous three-year program valued at around £480 million, which ended earlier this year. British officials have stated that since the Labour government took office in 2024, cooperation with France has prevented more than 42,000 attempts to cross the English Channel.
