UNODC Highlights Afghan Women’s Key Role in Economic Stability and Poppy Cultivation Replacement
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), on the occasion of the International Year of the Woman Farmer, has stated that Afghan women play a crucial role in agricultural transformation, particularly in shifting cultivation from poppy to sustainable livelihoods.
The agency, emphasizing women’s contribution to the agricultural sector, stressed that their participation can lead to increased household incomes, strengthened food security, and the creation of more resilient communities. According to UNODC, supporting women farmers is not only an economic measure but also a fundamental step towards sustainable development in rural areas of Afghanistan.
This emphasis comes amid the Taliban administration’s widespread restrictions on women’s social and economic presence, which have severely challenged their access to resources, technical training, and markets. Experts believe that without lifting these limitations and providing opportunities for work and education for women, efforts to replace poppy cultivation and strengthen alternative livelihoods will face significant difficulties.
The United Nations has previously reiterated the necessity of practical support for women farmers and investment in their capacities in agriculture, horticulture, and small rural industries—a sector that can play a decisive role in the country’s economic and social stability.
