Taliban Court in Badakhshan Sentences Woman and Man to 39 Lashes and One Year Imprisonment for ‘Immoral Relations’

The Supreme Court of the Taliban administration has announced that two individuals, including a woman, in Badakhshan province have been sentenced to 39 lashes and one year of imprisonment each on charges of “immoral relations,” and this sentence has been carried out.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, April 22, these individuals were first found guilty by the primary court of the Taliban administration in the Khash district of Badakhshan, and then the issued sentence was implemented after being confirmed by the Supreme Court of the administration.
The statement did not provide details about the trial process, the accused’s access to legal counsel, or how the evidence was reviewed; an issue that has consistently raised concerns about transparency and fair judicial standards within the Taliban’s legal system.
The enforcement of corporal punishment, particularly public flogging, has become one of the most controversial issues in Afghanistan in recent years. Human rights organizations have repeatedly described such punishments as violations of human dignity and inconsistent with Afghanistan’s international obligations, calling for their cessation.
Despite these criticisms, the Taliban administration continues to emphasize the implementation of hudud punishments and corporal penalties; an approach that has increased concerns over women’s rights and judicial procedures in the country.
