Afghan Women Face a Crisis of Shelter and Support Amid Rising Violence

In recent days, videos and stories have circulated on social media about a Turkish woman reportedly married to an Afghan man. In some of these videos, she speaks about the violence and harsh conditions she faces. Some accounts claim these events took place in Afghanistan, and her visit to her country’s embassy has also received significant attention.

While the details of this case have not yet been fully and independently verified, this media wave highlights an important point: even in difficult circumstances, some individuals can still reach out to an official or diplomatic institution for help.

However, the main issue here is not an individual case. What makes this story significant is a serious contradiction: the gap between “having at least some avenues for help” and “the near-complete absence of such avenues for many Afghan women.”

In today’s Afghanistan, the problem is not only violence against women. The core issue is that if violence occurs, there is almost no safe way out. Many women have no access to independent support organizations, a reliable judicial system, or any refuge to turn to in moments of danger.

Under such circumstances, silence or endurance becomes the only option for many—not by choice, but out of necessity.

This situation is not simply an administrative problem or a managerial failure. We are facing a deeper crisis. When channels for complaint, support, and protection are effectively closed or ineffective, the result is a continuation of violence with no real means to stop it.

The harsh reality of life for many Afghan women can be simply summarized: for millions of women, the concept of “shelter” effectively no longer exists.

This is not just a social issue; it signifies a deeper crisis where the absence of support allows violence to move beyond isolated incidents and become a permanent, inescapable condition.
