Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir to Visit Washington to Advance Iran-US Talks

A Pakistani security source has announced that Asim Munir, the commander of Pakistan’s army, will travel to Washington tomorrow, Friday, to continue Islamabad’s efforts to facilitate a new round of talks between Iran and the United States. According to international media, the security official told Al Jazeera that General Munir will head to the United States after concluding his visit to Tehran to follow up on the mediation process between Washington and Tehran. This move is part of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to bring the two sides closer.

The Pakistani army chief arrived in Tehran on Wednesday, April 14, leading a high-level political and security delegation. The purpose of the trip was to consult with Iranian officials on preparing the ground for a new round of talks between the US and Iran.

Seyed Abbas Araqchi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, expressed his gratitude to Pakistan for hosting the dialogue process following his meeting with Field Marshal Asim Munir on the social media platform X. He described this hosting as a sign of strengthened bilateral relations and emphasized the two countries’ shared commitment to enhancing regional peace and stability.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry also stated in a release that the discussions held between the US and Iran in Islamabad were “intense and extensive,” reaffirming the country’s role as a facilitator to maintain ongoing engagement between the two parties.

In recent years, Pakistan has sought to leverage its relationships with both Tehran and Washington to create diplomatic dialogue opportunities—an effort that could significantly impact regional political and security dynamics.
