Broad Democratic Support for Halting Arms Sales to Israel in U.S. Senate

The United States Senate on Wednesday failed to pass two resolutions aimed at stopping the sale of approximately $450 million worth of bombs and bulldozers to Israel. The proposals were blocked due to Republican opposition but received substantial backing from Democrats.

According to a Reuters report, 47 Democratic senators supported these resolutions, reflecting growing concern within the party over the deadly consequences of Israeli attacks on civilians in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. This development signals a gradual shift in the political climate among Democrats.

In separate votes, 40 Democratic senators opposed providing bulldozers to the Israeli military, while 36 voted against selling bombs. Additionally, none of the Democratic senators considering presidential bids endorsed these arms sales.

Decades of bipartisan support for Israel in the U.S. Congress have historically made such resolutions unlikely to pass. However, proponents of the measures say their goal is to increase pressure on U.S. administrations to take stronger steps to protect civilians.

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, aligned with the Democrats, stated that Israel uses these bombs in attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, and bulldozers are employed to demolish homes in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank. He emphasized that the United States must leverage its influence, including tens of billions of dollars in military aid, to compel Israel to halt these actions.
