Cautious Progress in Taliban-Pakistan Talks Mediated by China

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has announced that talks between the Taliban administration and Pakistan, mediated by Beijing, have entered a stage of progress, with both sides expressing willingness to continue negotiations.
On Friday, April 3rd, Mao Ning stated that the consultation process is ongoing steadily and both parties have welcomed China’s mediation efforts. According to him, since the escalation of tensions between Kabul and Islamabad, Beijing has expanded its contacts at various levels and created the necessary conditions for initiating dialogue.
These talks began on Wednesday in the city of Urumqi, China; however, no official details have yet been released regarding the content of the meetings or any potential agreements.
Tensions between the two sides have increased in recent months. Pakistan has urged the Taliban administration to take concrete action against the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its allied groups and to prevent attacks originating from Afghan territory against Pakistan.
Conversely, Pakistan’s continued airstrikes in certain areas of Afghanistan, including Kabul, over the past five months, have raised widespread concerns. Despite this situation, it remains unclear to what extent the Taliban administration is willing to accept Pakistan’s security demands, a matter that leaves the future of their relations uncertain.
