Taliban Claims Efforts to Rebuild Radars and Strengthen Afghanistan’s Defense Capabilities

Ahmadullah Muttaqi, head of the Taliban’s Information and Culture Department in Herat, has announced that his administration has initiated plans to enhance Afghanistan’s defense capabilities. According to him, these measures include reactivating air defense systems, repairing heavy weaponry, and launching factories to produce ammunition, weapons, and drones.

Muttaqi, who shared these remarks on his X (formerly Twitter) account, added that the Taliban’s Ministry of Defense has also begun work on restoring radar systems, training technical personnel, and increasing the readiness of military forces. He did not provide further details on the timelines, funding sources, or operational capacity of these projects.

Since regaining control over Afghanistan, the Taliban administration has consistently spoken about efforts to strengthen military structures. However, experts believe that in the absence of transparency, national oversight, and international legitimacy, it remains unclear to what extent these programs will be practical and sustainable. It is also uncertain how well these equipment and facilities will meet the country’s security needs under current conditions.

Given the difficult economic situation and the widespread needs of the population in livelihoods and public services, the focus on developing military infrastructure has once again raised debates about the prioritization of resources and the Taliban’s accountability to Afghan citizens.
