22.75 MW Surubi Solar Power Project Commissioned in Kabul

On Tuesday, the Afghan electricity company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat announced the commissioning of a 22.75 megawatt solar power project in Surubi district. The project was inaugurated in a ceremony held in Kabul and is described by officials as part of efforts to increase electricity production in the country.

At the event, Mawlawi Abdulsalam Hanafi, administrative deputy of the Taliban Prime Minister’s office, stated that Afghanistan needs over 5,000 megawatts of electricity to meet residential demand and more than 10,000 megawatts for the industrial sector. He highlighted these figures to illustrate the significant gap between actual demand and current capacity.

Hanafi also claimed that since the Taliban came to power, investments have been made to produce more than 1,200 megawatts of electricity within one year. However, no independent details or concrete results have been provided, and serious questions remain regarding transparency and sustainable electricity access.

According to Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat officials, the Surubi solar power project was implemented by the Turkish construction company “77” in cooperation with a domestic firm. Despite the launch of this project, energy experts caution that developing renewable energy without a comprehensive plan, contractual transparency, and institutional accountability cannot by itself resolve the country’s chronic electricity shortages.
