Herat Bans Rickshaws from City Center, Drivers Warn of Income Loss

Following a recent ban on rickshaws in central areas of Herat, several drivers have raised concerns over a sharp decline in their daily income and worsening living conditions. The decision, implemented by Herat Municipality under Taliban administration, aims to improve urban order and reduce traffic congestion.
Rickshaw drivers argue that the restriction was imposed without regard for the population’s economic conditions or the role of rickshaws as an affordable mode of transport. According to them, rickshaws are among the most accessible vehicles for Herat residents, and their removal from central zones increases commuting costs for citizens.
Meanwhile, some drivers have questioned the Taliban administration, asking why the import and customs registration of rickshaws continues if they are deemed a source of urban disorder. They criticize the move as inconsistent and lacking any alternative plan to support the livelihood of affected families.
Recently, alongside the new restrictions, unlicensed vehicles have also been removed from the streets of Herat. This comes as the livelihoods of hundreds of families in the city directly depend on rickshaw driving. The ongoing situation has amplified fears of rising poverty and unemployment.
