Tehran Hosts Regional Talks on Afghanistan With Six Nations Participating

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced that a multilateral meeting on Afghanistan was held in Tehran with the participation of special representatives from Russia, China, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The meeting focused on developments in Afghanistan and explored pathways to resolve the country’s ongoing crisis.

According to Esmaeil Baghaei, the talks were a continuation of Iran’s previous consultations with Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, as well as dialogues with Afghan and Pakistani officials. This marked the first meeting of its kind in the past two years. Baghaei said the high-level nature of the participants underscored the importance of the issue.

He elaborated that Russia and Uzbekistan were represented by envoys of their respective presidents, while Pakistan’s representative was appointed by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The main goal of the gathering, Baghaei added, was to create a platform for regional engagement and dialogue aimed at achieving a peaceful and political solution to secure stability in Afghanistan.

Baghaei also noted that while Afghanistan’s participation in such meetings could help enhance mutual understanding and reduce tensions among neighboring countries, Kabul’s decision not to attend was respected.

He emphasized that Tehran firmly believes the complex issues in Afghanistan can only be addressed through constructive dialogue among all parties and political groups involved. He said the Tehran meeting was organized with this principle in mind.

The conference has sparked reactions from political circles within Afghanistan and the broader region, refocusing attention on efforts to resolve the Afghan crisis through dialogue, prevent internal conflict, and reach national understanding.
