Taliban Administration Opens Door for Conditional International Cooperation on Environmental Issues

Representatives from donor agencies and international organizations on Monday (November 1) in the eighth meeting examined for the first time the priorities of the Taliban’s General Directorate for Environmental Protection, aiming to coordinate aid and developmental cooperation. The meeting, held at the Marble Palace, was attended by representatives from United Nations agencies and development partners.

Participants in the meeting viewed the sharing of the Taliban administration’s new environmental priorities positively and emphasized the need for increased coordination of aid to enhance its effectiveness. They announced their intention to align future assistance within the framework of the priorities outlined by the Taliban’s environmental office.

The Taliban’s General Directorate for Environmental Protection has prioritized the development of information systems related to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions inventory, climate damage assessment, establishment of research farms, tree planting, expansion of green areas, and strengthening the monitoring system for ozone-depleting substances.

This move comes amid ongoing challenges in coordinating international aid to Afghanistan under the Taliban administration due to its restrictions and conditions. Nevertheless, international organizations appear willing to adapt their support to the existing circumstances, which could have significant implications for the quality and scope of environmental programs in the country.
