Ashraf Ghani Says He Is Ready to Take Action If Called Upon by the People

Former Afghan president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has announced that he is willing to play a constructive role in resolving the country’s current crisis if the people demand it.
In a statement released Thursday, November 19, Ghani described the current situation in Afghanistan as a “critical and decisive juncture,” emphasizing the need for an urgent national dialogue to determine the country’s overarching interests and how to achieve internal consensus.
“It is time to redefine our national objectives, examine how to achieve them, and reorganize our relations with the international community,” Ghani stated. He said a shared future requires a consensus based on the participation of the majority of Afghan society.
The former president underscored the importance of unity, sustainable peace, and tolerance, calling for learning from the past to build a better future. He added that he does not seek power or personal gain, but if the people feel his involvement is necessary, he is prepared to propose solutions aimed at saving the country, grounded in values such as life over death, prosperity over poverty, and unity over oppression.
Ghani formed a national unity government with Abdullah Abdullah following the disputed 2014 election. Their rivalry continued in the 2019 elections, which again ended in a political agreement. However, following the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021, Ghani fled the country while Abdullah remained in Afghanistan.
More than four years have passed since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan by force. The group, officially recognized only by Russia, has imposed severe social restrictions—particularly on women and girls—violating the fundamental rights of millions of Afghans.
