Taliban and Pakistan Report Progress in Istanbul Talks

According to reports from the state-run television controlled by the Taliban administration, Taliban and Pakistani delegations have reached agreements on the majority of issues discussed during their recent negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey.

Sources cited by the broadcaster stated that only “a few limited issues” remain unresolved, with decisions possibly expected by the end of Monday, October 26. The talks began on Saturday and are currently in their third day.

Information released so far indicates that a joint statement is expected following the conclusion of the talks. The statement may address the extension of the ceasefire, reopening of border crossings, release of prisoners, the scheduling and location of the next round of talks, and several other matters.

While media outlets affiliated with the Taliban administration report progress in the negotiations, political observers have expressed doubts over the transparency and intentions of both parties—particularly the Taliban. The administration’s lack of international legitimacy continues to cast uncertainty over its dealings with countries like Pakistan.

The discussions are expected to continue late into the night, and it remains unclear what implications the final outcomes may hold for Afghanistan’s political and security future.
