Construction Begins on Major Freight Terminal in Kandahar

The Taliban’s local administration in Kandahar has announced the start of construction on a large freight terminal in Daman district of the province. The project will cover an area of 582 acres and is expected to cost over 502 million Afghanis.

According to published information, the terminal will include various sections such as a main building, parking areas for freight vehicles, roads, electricity and water distribution networks, offices for transportation companies, and special centers for commercial goods. The plan also includes buildings for fire-fighting vehicles and staff accommodation.

The project is being implemented through a public-private partnership. Taliban officials say full completion of the project is expected to take about three years.

Despite the project’s launch, concerns remain over the lack of transparency in its implementation, inadequate technical oversight, and potential corruption. These issues have once again raised questions about the Taliban administration’s economic priorities. The absence of unrestricted media access and oversight institutions has also led many Afghans to doubt the fate of such projects.

Kandahar, located in southern Afghanistan, is considered one of the country’s most critical provinces in terms of economic and transit significance. However, in the absence of effective and accountable governance, sustainable development in the region continues to face numerous challenges.
