Maulana Fazlur Rehman Ready to Mediate Peace Talks Between Afghanistan and Pakistan

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, has announced his readiness to act as a mediator to initiate peace talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan, provided suitable conditions are met.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad yesterday, he stated that talks conducted in a tense environment would not be productive and emphasized the need to create the proper groundwork before any negotiations take place. According to him, alongside a halt to armed conflicts, it is essential that the media environment, particularly aggressive propaganda and inflammatory statements, also calm down.

Fazlur Rehman stressed that Afghanistan and Pakistan are two countries that significantly influence each other, underscoring the importance of resolving issues through dialogue.

His remarks come amid strained relations between Kabul and Islamabad under the Taliban’s rule. Many residents of Afghanistan are concerned that instability caused by the Taliban’s policies and increasing foreign interventions has made the prospect of lasting peace difficult to achieve.

Although Taliban officials have repeatedly urged neighboring countries not to interfere in their affairs, their undemocratic and repressive actions have also complicated any potential constructive dialogue and trust-building with regional countries, including Pakistan.
